Structural Features

The center beam may be either through-type or non-through-type. In a non-through-type center beam, the beam extends only to the two bolster beams; the portion of the center beam between the bolster beams and the end beams is referred to as the traction beam.
To accommodate greater loads, the center and side beams may be designed as fish-belly girders, with a larger cross-sectional area at the center than at the ends; this design is known as a fish-belly bogie frame.
Cast-steel front and rear draft sill brackets are riveted to both ends of the center beam to facilitate the installation of the coupler and buffer assembly.
